Surgery of the airway is a challenging and very rewarding sphere of a group of specialties based in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. These two specialties overlap but tend to diverge at the larynx and the thoracic inlet. The larynx tends to be the purview of the ENT and the lower tracheal bronchial tree tends to be the purview of the Thoracic Surgeon. There is a hybrid specialist known as a Laryngologist Bronchoesophagologist whose sphere takes him/her down into the thorax through the thoracic inlet or the lumen of the trachea. While they do not do “thoracotomies” per se, they provide care for airway patency issues all the way into the mainstem bronchi and beyond. LBE was born of the father of much of bronchology, Chevalier Jackson.
